The Tunnel Murals

Gifted and Talented GCSE Option Students

Students who chose Art within their options were asked to design and create a series of large murals based upon their own auto portraits.
The Murals were painted directly onto the walls of the Tunnel in order to re-develop the area.
The project was linked to Catholic Citizenship and gave students and all Art staff the opportunity to collaborate and work on a large scale. It also gave the students the chance to use their faith in action and take responsibility for developing their own working environment.
30 students took part in the project and they developed their own silhouetted portraits from paper in order to create a template to spray with.
Students collaborated as a whole group and contributed individually to the whole design. Colour, pattern, shape and texture were used in subjectively in order to convey individuality, moods and add feeling to the artwork.
The murals were linked to contemporary artist Beatriz Milhazes, and they were used as a starting point for their first Year 10 GCSE sculpture Project – ‘All About Me’.
