Keystage 3 Levels

Have you ever wondered what the Keystage levels mean? Read below to find out what each level means, and be more informed about what your child needs to do to improve.

Level 3

You can:

Use different materials and techniques, Collect ideas for your artwork, Talk about ideas and techniques for project work, Design and make different types of artwork, Discuss ideas, Discuss and describe the work of artists and designers and use it to develop your own work.


Level 4

You can:

Use a range of art materials and techniques, Collect ideas to develop your artwork , Explain ideas and techniques for project work using keywords and drawings, Make different types of artwork , Write and understand various art terms, Discuss and describe the work and techniques of artists and designers, Change your work whilst you are making it to meet the needs that you have identified.

Level 5

You can:

Use a wider range of art materials and suitable techniques, Collect ideas and make judgements to develop your own art work , Communicate ideas and techniques for project work, Choose and make artwork for different uses, check that it meets the criteria you have identified., Discuss ideas confidently using some art terms, Write and describe the work and techniques of artists and designers and recognise how work is produced in different ways to meet different needs, Modify your artwork whilst you are making it to meet the criteria you have identified.

Level 6

You can:

Use and select from a wider range of art materials and techniques , Collect ideas and make valid judgements in order to develop your own art work and ideas, Communicate ideas and techniques for project work, Choose and make artwork for different uses, checking that it communicates with the audience you have identified, Discuss ideas confidently using a range of art terms, Discuss judge, and describe the work and techniques of artists and designers and recognise how, work is produced in different ways to meet different needs, You discuss and modify work and judge how successful it is.

Level 7

You can:

Select from an increased range of materials and techniques and use them with controlled skill, Collect ideas and make judgements to develop your art work and ideas, Communicate ideas and techniques for project work with confidence and skill, Identify and make artwork for different uses, checking that it meets the purpose for which it is created, Discuss ideas confidently using a wider range of art terms, Discuss judge, describe and use the work and techniques of artists and designers and recognise how work is produced in different ways to meet different needs, Judge work independently, whilst using a wider range of materials.

Level 8

You can:

Use an increased and suitable range of materials and techniques selecting and using them creatively, Collect ideas and make judgements to develop your artwork and ideas, Communicate ideas and techniques for project work with creative confidence skill and understanding, Choose and make artwork for different uses, checking that it meets the purpose and situation for which it is designed, Discuss ideas fluently using appropriate language fluently, Discuss judge, describe and relate to the work and techniques of artists and designers and understand how a range of work is produced in different ways to meet different needs, Discuss, change and judge work independently assessing how successful it is, whilst using a wider selection range of materials suitable to your needs.
